Life as the Guru

Life as the Guru

When we begin our spiritual journey, we seek out practices and teachers that will support us to DO what we think we need to DO in order to progress. We begin to enquire into the thought system and we see that it is not the logical, organised, useful functioning of what we are, but a crazy, illogical rising of automatic content that we do not in fact have any control over at all.

When we see that we have no control over it at all and attempt to stop it or change it, we watch as it goes crazy. We then begin to detach from it and fall back into a position of watching it and observing the craziness. This then gives us the spiritual will needed to begin to detach from larger parts of our story that has been the cause of immense suffering.

Throughout this journey, we reach out to supposed others to get guidance and support as we flip-flop in and out of one moment, believing the story and everything that it says into the next, being able to objectively watch and observe it without being caught up in it as ours. When needed, we reach out to get support to be pulled out of the thoughts, when it is impossible to see the wood through the trees as we find ourselves lost in the illusion of our story, pain and fear.

As we go on, however, our spiritual will strengthens and we flip-flop less and less, seeing that even when pulled into the story, it is easier to pull out. This comes from the investigation and enquiry and from the true desire to make this work our life and not just a practice.

Then there comes a point where the reaching out for support or information to push us on in the “journey” stops. It just stops. We no longer need to watch a video to hear a supposed other talk about non duality and how to attain enlightenment. We no longer need to reach out to be aware that we are in the story or have just come back out of it again. We no longer need to ask another why something is happening or what it is about and the need for understanding falls away.

Why? Because we have finally seen that LIFE is our Guru or support on this ‘journey’. It was all along. Nothing else is needed to explain, understand, know or see. We then fall back into a total acceptance of what IS and allow LIFE to show us in the moment what is needed for us to grow.

From this perspective every interaction with another is an opportunity to see something. Every supposed happening is an opportunity to grow and learn and there is an openness and willingness to allow for anything to be ok. This deep and total acceptance comes from faith. As we journey on, this faith grows and grows until it IS what we are and in this the journey stops. There is no longer a need to DO anything. No longer a WANT for anything. We stop and rest in the stillness as everything now moves through us. Now we go nowhere, do nothing and get nothing. Life happens IN us.

Can we allow life to become our Guru? Can we see every happening, interaction, relationship, event and moment of action to be our Guru? Can we begin to enquire into what it is trying to show us, because LIFE is inviting us to wake us up at every moment. Can we be present enough to accept the invite?
